Course Description:

  • This course will investigate the relationship between concussion and mental health issues that may occur as a result of the injury.  We will discuss challenges athletic trainers may face related to mental health issues and how athletic trainers may address these challenges.  We will also discuss some of the patient-reported outcome measures available to assist athletic trainers in their screening and referral of patients to mental health professionals.

  • Bio: Dr. Scott Bruce has been involved in the athletic training profession for 40 years.  Dr. Bruce spent the first two-thirds of his career involved predominately in clinical athletic training working with athletes in a variety of settings working with youth-aged athletes to elite level athletes.  The past several years, Dr. Bruce has worked predominately in athletic training education and research.  Dr. Bruce earned his doctoral degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Learning and Leadership.  He is a man of many hats and titles.  Dr. Bruce is currently the Assistant Dean for Research for the College of Nursing and Health Professions, Associate Professor/Director of Research for the Masters of Athletic Training Program at Arkansas State University, and the Co-chair Veterans Suicide Prevention Project in Jonesboro, AR.  Currently, he is engaged in concussion-related research and working with veterans examining how concussions may have an impact upon their mental health and suicide ideation.
